What age should a child be to start surfing lessons?
Starting children in surfing lessons can vary depending on the child’s comfort with water, physical abilities, and maturity level, but a common recommendation is around the age of 5 to 8 years for private lessons. At this age, children generally have developed better balance, strength, and the ability to follow instructions, which are crucial for learning to surf. It’s also important that they have basic swimming skills and feel comfortable in the ocean. If your child has no ocean experience, it's best to start out with a bodyboard in very small surf. We will occasionally switch to a bodyboard if the student if intimidated by the ocean, and take it very slow, working on building confidence and familiarity in the ocean.
When is someone too old to start surfing lessons?
It’s never really too late to start surfing lessons, as long as you’re in good health and comfortable in the water. Many adults, even those in their 50s, 60s, and beyond, take up surfing with great enthusiasm. We cap the age limit at 60 years of age providing you are in good physical health. The key is to have realistic expectations about the learning process and to make sure you are honest about your health assessment, and we may also ask for a Doctor's release to participate in the lesson program, based upon our assessment. Please keep in mind that safety is our first concern. If you perform a regular workout routine, including cardio and flexibility, then you may be eligible for surfing lessons. If you are not sure, we will help assess you with more details.
Health: The Ocean as Your Gym
Surfing is more than just a sport; it's a holistic workout that engages your body and soothes your mind. Paddling out works your cardiovascular system, boosting heart health and endurance. The act of standing up on your board is a test of balance and strength, targeting your core, legs, and arms in a dynamic, full-body workout. But it's the mental health benefits that truly set surfing apart. The ocean's vastness encourages mindfulness, reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity. At Primal Surf School, we don't just teach you to surf; we guide you towards a healthier lifestyle.
Fun: The Thrill of the Wave
There's an undeniable thrill in catching your first wave, and at Primal Surf School, we aim to make every lesson an adventure. Brigantine's waves offer the perfect playground for beginners and seasoned surfers alike, providing a sense of accomplishment with every ride. Surfing is about joy, the rush of adrenaline, and the laughter shared between waves. It's a chance to disconnect from daily stresses and reconnect with the simple pleasures of life.
Social: A Community on the Waves
Surfing is inherently social. At Primal Surf School, you'll join a community of like-minded individuals, all drawn to the surf for their reasons but united by the waves. Our lessons and events are opportunities to meet new people, share experiences, and forge friendships that extend beyond the beach. The culture of surfing is one of support and camaraderie; we celebrate every success and learn from every wipeout, together.
Environmental Connection: Surfing in Harmony with Nature
Brigantine's unique location next to a wildlife refuge offers an unparalleled surfing experience. Our pristine waters are a testament to the area's environmental cleanliness and our commitment to conservation. In The Wake of The Covid-19 Shutdown:
There's been a noticeable surge in the intensity of grade school and high school sports, often pushing young athletes to their limits prematurely. In this high-pressure environment, surfing emerges as a refreshing alternative, offering a holistic approach to physical and mental wellness. Unlike traditional competitive sports, surfing fosters a connection with nature, encourages individual progress at one’s own pace, and cultivates a sense of tranquility through its meditative aspects. It’s a sport where the emphasis is on personal growth, balance, and harmony with the ocean. Surfing not only builds physical strength and endurance in a gentle manner but also enhances mental resilience, promoting a sense of well-being and contentment. For young athletes looking for an escape from the rigor of competitive sports, surfing offers a pathway to physical fitness, mental clarity, and an overall healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
